GEO
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Short answer
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your business's online presence so that generative AI models — the ones that create original responses rather than retrieve links — confidently recommend your business by name when a user asks for a recommendation in your domain.
GEO is a step beyond AEO. AEO focuses on getting your content cited inside generated answers. GEO focuses on getting your business recommended by name when a user asks an evaluative or comparative question like 'who should I hire for digital strategy in Atlanta' or 'what is the best AEO consultant.'
GEO depends on three signals: entity consistency across platforms (your name, services, and credentials match everywhere), source diversification (you appear in directories, publications, social platforms, not just your own site), and narrative authority (a coherent body of public work that demonstrates depth in one or more topics).
The technical layer matters but is not enough. You need clean Person and Organization schema with sameAs references to every authoritative profile (LinkedIn, GitHub, industry directories), consistent NAP (name/address/phone) across listings, and a body of content that any model can read as confident expertise.
Most businesses are not yet competing on GEO. The ones that build for it now will have a multi-year head start when generative search displaces traditional search for high-intent queries.
