AEO: Getting Cited by AI Search — Step by Step

AI search engines do not rank pages the way Google does. They cite sources that demonstrate clear expertise, structured information, and cross-platform consistency. Here is the exact process I use with clients.

Audit your current AI visibility

Search for your brand, your top services, and your competitors in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Document every mention, misattribution, and gap. Screenshot everything because these results change fast. This baseline tells you exactly where you stand and what to prioritize.

Implement comprehensive schema markup

Add Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, HowTo, Article, and Review schema to every relevant page. AI models rely heavily on structured data to understand what your business does, who you serve, and what you are known for. Use JSON-LD format and validate with the Schema Markup Validator.

Build topical authority content clusters

Create pillar pages for each core topic your business should own, then build 8-15 supporting articles per pillar that link back to it. AI models favor sources that demonstrate deep, comprehensive knowledge on a subject rather than sites with one thin article on every topic imaginable.

Optimize entity signals

Strengthen your entity presence across Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, LinkedIn, and industry-specific databases. AI models build entity graphs from these structured sources. Make sure your name, description, and core attributes are consistent everywhere. If you do not have a Wikipedia page, focus on getting cited by sources that do.

Create FAQ-rich pages

Build dedicated FAQ sections that answer the exact questions people ask AI search engines about your industry. Use natural conversational phrasing, not keyword-stuffed headers. Each answer should be 2-4 sentences of direct, quotable information. These become the snippets AI models pull from.

Strengthen cross-platform consistency

Align your messaging, credentials, and service descriptions across your website, Google Business Profile, social media, podcast appearances, guest articles, and directory listings. AI models cross-reference multiple sources and trust entities that present a consistent narrative everywhere they appear.

Monitor AI citation tracking

Set up weekly tracking for your brand mentions in AI search results. Tools like Otterly.ai or manual spot checks work. Track which queries cite you, which cite competitors, and which cite nobody. Build a spreadsheet comparing your visibility month-over-month across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews.

Iterate based on results

Review your tracking data every two weeks. Double down on content types and topics where you are gaining citations. Fill gaps where competitors are getting cited but you are not. Update existing content with fresher data and more specific claims. AI models refresh their training data periodically, so consistency and recency both matter.
